The mechanic at a good garage here in Ithaca told me that a friend of his was in the US Army stationed in Germany and had his 300ZX speed limiter removed, allowing 170mph speeds on the Autobahn.

This got me wondering what some contemporary cars will do with this limiter removed. I've heard the M3 is good for 168, for example.

Most cars in Japan come with 112mph (180km/h) limiters... I remember some Ford nut scoffing at the spec sheet of the Skyline GT-R because its listed top speed was 112.

My 240SXs had 112mph limiters too... but they'd probably only do about 125 unlimited.. haha.

the old S-10 extreme i had only did 90mph and it hit the rev limiter. the 4spd auto seemed to only have about 20 to 30 mph to go anyway.

my dads old E36 M3 had the limiter removed and we got up to around 150 no problem, i don't know what the limiter was set at though.

Fastest I've ever been- 191 mph in the RX-7, had another 1900 rpm's to go, this was before the bridgeporting when I was 3mm.

That is funny, considering my wife's old 99 Ford F-150 V6 w/ 5-spd manual was limited to 105. Wonder what he'd say about that?

i've always wondered why cars in the states aren't limited to 75 mph. why limit a car at 125 mph if you can't legally drive anywhere faster than 75? if safety was the real issue in speeding tickets, cars would just come factory limited. but then insurance companies and towns/states wouldn't make any money.

    Vehicles I’ve owned…

    2002 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2.0 5/spd
Seemed like it had a governor at 118. Would only smack
120 down hill, then would back down 5 mph or so.

1994 Nissan Altima GLE (auto) This car was limited
To about 130 if I remember correctly.

    1998 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 x-cab 2.7 5/spd
    Electronically limited at 105mph

2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 Cummins Diesel
I ran it out about 1 month ago, I think 110 mph was as fast
As it could go, but still charging hard.

Maybe set it at 90 so you won't have to be constantly bouncing off the limiter.

  12. 05-04-2005 09:45 PM #12
Fastest I was ever at in a car was 145mph and it was still pulling

After removing my speed limiter, uh... old girlfriend, I buried the speedo in a '72 Super Beetle...
    down a very big hill.
So, I guess that was 90+ something.

    Good Shot!!

I had a Stock 1991 Audi 200 Turbo Quattro 20 Valve on Radar-DPS at 163mph outside of Flagstaff at about 8,000' in elevation......... Scary Monster Cats, that car just didn't want to slow down at all

I've got a SVT Focus and there is no limiter, the stock Focus is limited to 108mph, but I've read in fourms that people have had there SVT's upwards of 160+ with a theroretical top speed of 172ish! I wouldn't dare try and go that high, 155 would be pushing what I'd dare to do.

I think I've been to mid 120's with my VR6 with the limiter still there. Didnt dance with the limiter tho. I think unlimited shes good for 145 at least
Ma's W8 pulled like a banshee to 120 and I'm damn sur eit would test the 132 limiter, havent done it either. I feel its good for 150 maybe 160
Ridden in an E39 M5, it pulled to the limiter in fifth with revs still to go. I feel it could go to the 170s had the limiter not kicked in at 155

no way in hell its getting anywhere near that. The SVT countour with similar gearing, more power, and better aerodynamics only made it to 143 before hitting the wall.

My MKIV Jetta is limited at 130 and is suprisngly nice at that speed.

the new acura TL doesnt have a limiter....at leaast one not before 150....

yeah Ive heard stock 12v VR6 (unlimited) can reach about 140, and the 24v's go about 5 mph faster.

LoL I hit the speed limiter in my 87 Pathfinder once... was pretty scary. I was on the interstate doing like 85 (keeping up with traffic) and all of a sudden around 88 the transmission disengaged. When my speed dropped down to around 70 it re-engaged.

    I took an '81 Audi 4000 5+5 to ~92 once.....the speedo pegged at 85.

    God, that was scary.

I also took my protoge to ~115....thing felt like it was gonna take off.

Havnt done much more than 90 in the 80 yet, although it feels right at home fast like that......I'll have to see what she can do sometime while I'm home after school.

I hit the limiter in my accord at 115. I've heard about other same year accords going faster but i'm not sure why.

People have been able to get MK3 VR6s up to the 150-154mph range with only a minimal mods. I had my 95 GTI VR6 up to 146 before running out of real estate, and my 95 Audi 90 Quattro shot up to the 130 limiter surprisingly fast.

  35. 05-05-2005 07:05 AM #35
Ive done 120mph in my mk3 golf 2.0 with mods, TT chip which must remove the limiter if there was one in the 94 model.
