I was looking at VW UK's website for Touran info and noticed under future cars that the all-new Jetta is coming to the UK!

Wither Bora? Is Jetta the worldwide name now?

I think cause in places like mexico they still sell the bora and the jetta. The bora being a MKIV jetta and the jetta being MKV jetta. That is a guess at least

In Mexico the MKV is known as Bora while everyone else calls it the Jetta.

Mexico remains the only place where the Bora nameplate lives on. For the rest of the world it´s Jetta again.
Just like the Lupo is now Mexico only, too.

anyone know why they still call it bora there, im assuming its because of the way certain letters are pronounced depending on region, or the word has a different meaning there (mitsubishi pajero = slang for male genitalia in some south american country) (i think)

some countries are selling the Mk4 and Mk5's side by side (who knows why), and whatever name the Mk4 has, obviously, the Mk5 has a different one. Mexico is just one of the few countries doing this

edit: typo, my post didnt make sense

In a stunningly odd decisión, they have decided to revive the MK3 nameplate "Vento" for the MK5 Jetta here in chile... weird.

Great... how long before we see kids in the US sporting Mk5 Jettas with "Vento" badges?

Does anyone know where the name "Jetta" came from in the first place?

In Mexico, the Mk4 is still the Jetta, the Mk5 is the Bora. VW de Mexico is still selling the Mk4 because it's a huge money maker for them. Go travel in Mexico and you'll see thousands of Mk4 Jetta's. Up here in the border states, it seems that 1 out of every 5 Mk4 Jetta's you see driving around is bearing Mexican registration. It's popular because unlike the US VW de Mexico offers a stripped down version called the Jetta Europa, which has no airbags, ABS, power windows or air conditioning and starts at under $15,000.

    That's an interesting thought..
The girl who crashed into my jetta was originally from mexico, and although she spoke very good english, she called my car a "hetta"

sorry, I made typo in my first post.

I've been to Mexico, and have seen the Jetta Europe you speak of. I was surprised to see a Mk4 w/ no airbags, nonpainted intake manifold, etc.
But I didn't know they were such a big Mexican money maker, i learned something new.

I always liked the name Vento and Toledo, which to me always went together in my head:

What are they going to call the Lupo in other markets?

Oh yeah, VW would be shooting itself in the foot if it phased out the Mk4 Jetta anytime soon. It may end up becoming like the Nissan Tsuru (which is essentially the B13 model Sentra that stopped production back in 1994), held over for a few more years unchanged.

I think they are selling both Jettas so the customer has the option of buying a small Jetta or a not so small Jetta.
