The Automobile Flashback series chronicles the history - good or bad - of the automobile on a year by year basis. All contributions, questions, pictures, etc. relevant to each of the episodes are welcome. This index to the Automobile Flashback Series serves as a reference point to all threads in the series. I will update this post as new episodes are added. The 1920's -
Car companies popping up left and right, basic mechanical innovation, the Ford Model T rules the roads, and auto racing kicks into high gear:
1920, 1921, 1922, 1923, 1924,1925, 1926, 1927, 1928, 1929The 1930's -
The Great Depression narrows the field and some great marques fold, "styling" becomes increasingly important as cars become more distinct and beautiful, and a funny little car from Germany is launched in a Faustian pact between the Fuhrer and Ferdinand Porsche:
1930, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939The 1940's -
WWII dominates the decade - car design and production is virtually suspended for many years, but then kicks up big time in the end of the decade:
1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1949The 1950's -
A booming US economy, boundless optimism, poodle skirts, the Cold War, and Elvis. US car companies are on a styling roll:
1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959The 1960's -
Pony Cars, Muscle Cars, BIG horsepower, little Beetles, British Beatles, Hippies in Microbusses on their way to Woodstock:
1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969The 1970's -
Compact cars, subcompact cars, Japanese cars make it in America, Gas lines, Platform shoes, Disco:
1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976(Note: if you want to add to one of the older threads, be aware that the "quick reply" feature does not work on archived threads. You need to use the "reply" button on a post in the thread in order to revive it from the archives.)
This post will be linked to from all of the other flashback threads, so I can maintain this index once, and there is a central reference to all episodes of the series.
Post here, if you must, but I would urge anyone who desires to, to open the episode for the appropriate year, and reply to a post in that thread. There's really no reason for any episode in the series to remain dormant - we have really only scraped the surface of any of the years documented.

Do you have a word.doc form of the series?I like it enough to print it out and put it in a binder.

Nope, no word doc format. I do have many of the "First posts" as RTF files, but they don't have the images - they are formated to post into the threads here.
I've often wondered if the Vortex Media Group would want to publish this series as a book. There would be a lot of legwork to do to clear all the copyrighted material though.

4x4's you have done a incredible job on the flashback series. This series index is a great idea as well.If it wasn't for you, this whole flashback series would of died when they banned me. Hopefully I'll stick around and contribute in the future threads.
Keep up the good work!

I was taking a Car Lounge sabatical. I found myself spending too much time here, and not enough time on the rest of my life. I'll be back now, but in moderation. Probably limiting it to just this series mostly.

I know the feeling. It's good to walk away occasionally. The limiting factor for me, at least lately, is the dearth of decent topics to get involved with. Too much heat and not enough light, as they say. It's good to see you back in the Flashbacks, though, indeed!![]()

Just seeing this thread is a flashback in itself. Hard to believe it's been 4 yrs.I'm kinda suprised to see that we made it all the way to 1976. I kinda lost interest sometime in the 60s.
I got sone catching up to do.

What you get isn't always what you see.
