Thread: 07 TL-S vs. 07 G35 vs. 07 IS350 at Willow Springs Racetrack. Winner...

  1. 04-11-2007 12:37 PM #1
Driven by professional DRIVER Keiichi Tsuchiya TL-S, G35, IS350 were going at Willow Springs, CA race track.

TL-S, and FWD, prevail in this one. The FWD vehicle with less advertised POWER beat both RWD cars FULL 2 seconds.

    1. TL-S 6MT - 1:36:67 sec
    2. IS350 - 1:38:24
    3. G35 6MT - 1:38:67

Pics from the Japanese magazine the article was in.

In fairness the TL-S is supposed to be the performance version of the TL while the G35 and IS350 are more "normal" versions.

But still, pretty amazing to see Honda being able to still do what they do best, make killer competitive FWD platforms.

2 seconds is quite a margin, too.

    .

i have to disagree with you. the IS350 is the sport version as well. The normal version would be the IS250. The G35 is only offered with one engine...so there isnt any normal or sport version aside from trim levels.

My point is neither the G35 or IS350 are "uplevel" sport oriented version of a base model. IS350 basically adds more power. The TL-S and TL are 2 completely different cars having driven both.

Still suprised the Tl-S beat them by THAT MUCH. Haven't driven the new G35 (must not handle all that well?), but I have driven the IS350 and I did NOT like tha handling it displayed. Hardly sports-carish.

Congratulation, you have just posted something that will be remembered in every G35 v. everything post for some time.

The TL-S is a sport version of a car that wasn't incredibly sporty to begin with. The three cars are in about the same price range, this is a very fair fight.

Keep in mind, the G's "Sport" trim package does add an LSD, bigger wheels/tires, and bigger brakes, but this car (along with all G35 6MT's) does have it. I don't see anything in the article about the G35 having the 4-wheel active steer package, though, but for Tsuchiya's purposes I doubt it would improve his times.

There is no lower/upper level engine trim for the G35. only trim levels. The car used in this test has the Sport trim level. So its an apples/apples comparisson.

As for the IS350, IT IS the up Level Sport Version of the IS. the IS250 does not come standard with a sport tuned suspension. With the IS350 You get the sport tuned suspension aswell as a more powerfull engine.

Actually the regular TL is pretty sporty. Especially in older 6spd trim (dont offer 6spd anymore on the base TL). I remember it being up there in some handling tests in the past against the RWD'ers.

As far as price this is what I came up with...

    Base TL-S w/ summer tires = $38,325 (most equipped of 3)
    G35 Sport 6MT w/navi/premium pkgs = $37,400 (no summer tires)
Lexus IS350 w/ cheapest navi pkg = $41,885 (also includes 18" summer tires)

Looks fairly even in price except for the IS350 being kind of "up there".

IS350 cant be tuned that differently from the IS250, both felt basically the same in turns (other than the IS350 having a lot more pickup out of turns).

the base 2007 TL has a much softer suspension then the '04-'06 Cars and isnt avail with a manual transmission. it really isnt that sporty. Not for '07 anyway. You get the sport tuned suspension, 6-Speed. bigger brakes, & LSD with the Type-S only.

perhaps what you drove was an IS250 equip with the optional sport tuned suspension. The Sport tuned suspension isnt an option on the IS350, its standard fair. in any event, conmparing a base IS250 tpo a base IS350....tthe 350 is the up-level sport model.

    That's surprising!

Would have been nice to see a 335i in there for comparison. I do like the RDX lap time thrown in, though!

to the 335i lap-time being in there. Although a similar equipped 335i (w/navi, sport pkg, premium pkg etc..) is $48k

RDX lap time was itneresting to see. Would of liked to have seen some other small lux SUVs thrown in there too.

Considering the IS350 similarly equipped is $41,885...my guess would be a helluva lot more.

Bwahaha!!! How many times have the Infiniti fanbois and G8 lovers dismissed the TL for being frd?

It will probably cost between $50-60k. Way out of this class. It is supposed to be competition for the M3, S4, RS4, and upcoming AMG C-Class.

In terms of price and features, the TL-S is comparable to a IS350 and G35 Sport. It is not an M3, IS-F, CTS-V, AMG C-Class competitor, nor was it intended to be.

Yes, if you read on I posted exactly what you just said.

  26. 04-11-2007 02:00 PM #26
Those results are surprising to say the least, though the difference in tires could explain it (if the TL-S had summer rubbers).

FWIW, I've driven them all and the TL-S is my favorite....

  27. 04-11-2007 02:04 PM #27
Wow, very cool, but for my money I'd take the slowest of the 3.

Also, the RDX laptime is none too shabby. Very cool.

honda knows how to make a great performing FWD car. TSX does very well in competition, and obviously the old integra, etc. This was a surprise to me nonetheless.. but not surprising. if that makes any sense

  31. 04-11-2007 02:20 PM #31
Ironic that among the RWDers, the automatic transmission won.

And overall, FWD beat both RWD.

    THE END IS NEAR!

PS It really could be the tires. A Subaru Legacy GT spec.B beat an Infiniti G35, Lexus IS250, BMW, Audi, Volvo, and MazdaSpeed6 but it had summer tires helping it out.

  32. 04-11-2007 02:20 PM #32
    But I can't drift in the TL-S.

    yep, very interesting results

of course, the lap times don't speak to how each car actually feels when going around the track, but if you're running faster then who cares about style points

The American rags still give the TL pretty good reviews, even though it's getting long in the tooth. Goes to show you how damned good the Accord chassis was to begin with.

The Honda J series engine just doesn't get enough credit for being a great engine. It hangs in with the competition with a lot less technology. Especially given that it's an ancient design and sometimes gives away a lot of displacement to its rivals, although this was not one of those times.

  35. 04-11-2007 02:39 PM #35
What, the G35 is sportier than the overpriced E90 but not sporty enough for the TL-S in this unfair comparo?

that said, even the TL is plenty fast for me.
