Hybrid parking?! They use little to no gas, let them circle the parking lot looking for a place to park.

...only.
My office added these about a month ago. I park on the 4th floor so it doesn't affect me much, but it leads me to wonder just how many subgroups of drivers need their own spots.Have you come across any "unusual" _______-only parking spots?

It was pretty funny when my old place of employment, a factory with 4000ish workers, decided it was time to comply with the AMA guidance on handicapped parking spots -- 10% of the lot.Imagine how pissed off people were when the closed 10% of the space in two giant parking lots were marked off for handicapped tags... and a factory....

I want to park a K20a in like an EG hatch in that spot.

I'm sorry but the handicap parking is my biggest peeve and I have alot of them. Why does a store need to have the front 30 spots reserved for handicapped people?A) How many handis are going to be shopping at a given store AT ONE GIVEN TIME (do they even have that many wheelchairs available)?
B) They are on wheels for god's sake, make them park in the back of the lot!!! The rest of us are on our feet all day and could use the rest.

You mean 50 feet closer to a 70,000 sq.ft. store that they are going to walk around? Doesn't really help that much, does it?

I'm a male and park in the "family parking/people with children" spot in my local grocery store all the time. Legally, they can't do a whole lot. It's a separate issue from Handicapped Parking (which I never park in.)
Part of my resentment is the fact that it's the closest grocery store to my home, and it's also the dirtiest/busiest one with the most old folks shuffling around. So that probably accounts for some of my frustration.

There should be a few handicap parking spaces at the typical supermarket, pehaps a few more than that at the ChinaMart.
Hybrid parking spaces?...what utter nonsense. The country has gone mad!

Not all Handicap people are in wheelchairs and some just cannot be in the extreme heat or cold like my sis-in-law. 30 years old and diagnosed with MS 10 years ago. She is still doing well, has no issues with motor-coordination at this time, so can drive and walk, but extreme heat and cold, both of which we get here in Montreal, can wreak havoc on her system. Going from a AC'd or heated car to a store in little to no time is crucial for her. BTW she is tested for driving ability every year if your worried about that...
She gets **** all the time from people cause she does not appear handicapped, but they always back off when she says "Do you want my MS?"

I agree that the Hybrid spots are stupid. My wife's an architect and she explained that it's a requirement for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) ratings. Essentially it's a great way to get a BJ from some tree huggers.*Disclaimer: We own a hybrid, but still think hippies smell funny.

My mom has a handicapped card, yet doesn't use a wheelchair. She can't walk for very long without some sort of support... so every footstep closer to the store (and the carts) counts.

For Handicap parking, I understand old people and/or people with crutches...but I get a little angry when I see these obese people with amigos flop out of their cars after parking close...seems to me they should put the "Handicap because I ate too much" parking spots out in the back 40 of the lot...

My own opinion is that handicapped parking is now being abused by obese people that could really use the exercise.
But most people are incredibly lazy these days. At the subway, I see perfectly healthy people clog the elevators and make truly handicapped people wait.
They choose the elevator since walking and riding an escalator is too much exertion.

By law, they're required to have a certain number of handicapped spots, based on the number of total spots.
Total Spaces in Lot Accessible Spaces Required
1-25 1 van
26-50 1 std. + 1 van
51 - 75 2 std. + 1 van
76-100 3 std. + 1 van
101-150 4 std. + 1 van

301-400 7 std. + 1 van
401-500 7 std. + 2 van
501-1000 2% of total spaces*

And what do they do if they've got artificial legs like my grandfather, spina bifida like my cousin, shrapnel in their foot like my uncle, a nerve condition like my friend, or a broken foot in a walking boot like my girlfriend last September? Or MS, or a club foot, or a balance disorder?
The lack of regard for handicapped people makes me sick. **** your convenience. **** your feet. And **** your sense of entitlement. These people deal with **** on a daily basis you, by the grace of karma, will probably never have to deal with, however much you deserve to. All I can hope for, and I honestly do, is that any ******* who begrudges the handicapped the reasonable concessions to their physical limitations be forced to deal with physical limitations themselves. Park at the back of the lot next time you break your foot, why don'tcha?

They may not use them all of the time. My old man had MS and like VWPal pointed out, was affected by weather, stress, etc. so it was occasionally used.

"Walk it off" and "toughen up" like my dad says. I'm going to stand idly by as people condone the further pussification of America and their "ultra-PC" views on life. I stand by what I said, you park 40' closer to the store and then what? Have someone piggyback you around the store? Still have to walk the store don't you? Oh wait, that's right, just move all the aisles closer to the front of the store.....for the handicapped. The rest of us will shop the non-handicapped aisles.

Maybe it's just a sore spot for me, as I've dealt with a minor physical disability myself and am pretty aggressive with people who begrudge the disabled reasonable accommodations. But I honestly, seriously wish anybody who bitches about handicapped parking - or ramps, or stalls, or whatever - a pair of broken femurs, just so they can have a taste.

I have no problem with Handicap stalls, but I do think it seems a bit easy to get a pass, although I understand some conditions are not as visible as others but it is something that I think is very abused.A local building with underground parking has Smart only spots, basically they took some areas that no other car could fit and marked them off for the Smarts. A good idea as it give us some unique places to park and keeps the normal spots for full size vehicles, perhaps a price discount could be in order, especially when downtown parking is $30 a day around here.
