Do the fans come on normally? Can you hear them (or have you ever been able to hear them)?

I have been borrowing a 2001 LincolnLS 5 Speed V6, which is probably one of the finest vehicles ever made. It is having an issue with overheating. I posted it on the Lincoln vs. Cadillac forum (
), and they thought it might be a bubble in the line, or the thermostat ( Car Overheats Intermittently Lincoln LS ) . The car only overheats about once a month, and when it is in heavy traffic. I have found that a fix to the problem is to put the heater on full blast -- then the temperature needle climbs back to normal. So if I am able to get the car to not overheat by blasting the heater, what are the likely causes of the problem? Fan switch? Thermostat?
Thanks!
