Cool. Are these your pics?

This PS effect is especially fun for those of us who like toys... and it looks more, oh, realistic on some than others. Anyway, lets see some better stuff from you guys.

What's involved in doing this sort of thing? I've always had a hard-on for the mind games these sorts of pictures put me through.

Its really only two key points. One is the angle of the photo. It should be from a position/at an angle that you would normally not see in real life. The lineup of Miatas is a great one. There might be a hill that the photographer is standing on, but we dont know. So it adds to the look of 'looking down on a set of miniatures'. Second is setting the focal depth very narrow. The effect can be exaggerated in PS, the nascar race and the one of the subie are a little overdone imo, but the other two are great.![]()
I do not have a witty comment to share at the moment.

Chutzler - pretty easy to do:
You need to select an area that you'd like to emphasize (focus) with a pretty huge feather. There are several ways to do this (masks/gradient tool, polygonal lasso, etc.). Once that's done, you can simply use the lens blur tool or gaussian blur tool and adjust to your preference. Or, before using the filter, you can copy your feathered selection on to a separate layer so you can fine-tune your focus. When that's all done, play with the curves and/or levels to make the lighting more appropriate to a model.

Or maybe I do get it.... the point is to make real-life cars look like Matchbox cars, or something like that?

Sounds like you get it

Even though this is The Car Lounge, you can use this effect to make anything look like a miniature scene.

Is there a way to do it old school with film and camera settings or filters instead of using digital effects?

You can also get the shown heavily overdone photoshopped tilt shift effect with a lensbaby. Personally.. I'm not a fan of this sort of thing, but whatever floats your boat.![]()
That said, I will say I *am* a fan of proper tilt shift lenses and photography done using such. Used correctly it is a heck of an effect for shooting architecture & landscape, among hundreds of other uses.![]()

Is there a way to do it without as much blur. I think the pics would look a whole lot better that way, still saweeet though.![]()

This is true. Actual tilt-shift photography (and not lensbaby) is, well, better, but for free (and while needing a break at work), the fake PS way has some benefit.
Some real (non-automotive) examples:

Yes, but the good "Made In England" ones by Lesney, not the crappy Chinese-made ones after they sold out.
