 For my 1000th post...My Nismo GT-R« »

Hey Car Loungers..as some of you may or may not know, the Cossie has gone to a new home, and that left quite a void let me tell you. I wasn't really looking for a Skyline, but when a car comes along this good, you jump on it. I was on the fence about these cars until I drove one. In short, the Cosworth (as good as it was) is no match for Godzilla. Some F.A.Q.'s before we get started.

*Its a 1990 Nismo Skyline GT-R. They only made 400 of these cars for JGTC Homologation. You can easily I.D. a Nismo edition by checking the following:

VIN number starts with a 1, Nismo GT-R's are the only Skylines that have this.
No rear wiper
No A/C
No Stereo
Ceramic turbos replaced with bigger steel turbines.
JGTC body work, includes 'speed holez' in front bumper, skirts, duckbill spoiler.
No mesh over the front mount intercooler.
No ABS.

*It had only 57,XXX kilometers on it when I got it. Interior was perfect, original paint.

*Previous owner lived 60k outside Tokyo, took the train to work everyday, drove the car on weekends. Never crashed, one NON SMOKING owner.

Read 'em and weep:

First day I got her, notice auction writing still on the windsceen:

Vancouver is the Skyline capital of N.America, here's me with an R34.

Speaking of R34, check out the new wheels, wrapped with Yokohama ES100's.

Gratuitous rolling shot:

Tearing up the streets of Mission Raceway on my first track day with her:

My trackday group, all great cars, drivers were really nice folks too (NSX was supercharged ) :

My good friend EFYH took these:

With a friend's Viper:

With my friend Erics's Golf (thanks again for hosting Eric!)

Good times:

Future plans include dyno day on the 9th (I'll report back when I have some numbers for you) some braided brake lines and some DOT 4, an alignment and lots more track days! This car is equipped with a boost controller currently set at a half bar, and it's proper quick, so with the safety of a wideband we're going to see how much we can boost on the current fuel pump. So after dyno day I should have two setting to play with: going to work boost, and going to track boost. I have absolutely no complaints with this car, it had some big shoes to fill and what can I say? Gonna need some bigger shoes.

Congradulations, you have yet again pissed off the Car Lounge for having a car we could only dream about. I'd give up my sister and brother for your past two cars. I remember how you had your insurance on you Cossie set up for an Escort, how do you have insurance set up for this one? Also, how did you find the car on track day, did you surprise any other drivers?

You are the win.

I'd say something else, but the drool is still on the floor. When I heard your secret plan to get a GT-R it figured, but you sure picked the one to get!

Also, you know you're lying by both claiming to tear up the streets AND that there is any nonsmoker in Japan. Sheesh.

Wow! quite the car. My grandfather remarried some younger woman who owns a huge logging company in Vancouver (gold digging old man lol) so if I ever go visit I'm keeping my eyes peeled. I'm pretty sure she said she lives in the tallest building in vancouver?

If I'm not mistaking half a bar is just over 7lbs correct? More boost = more fun

Chris

My yearly insurance is $1250 Canadian,
The car was even with the group I was running with, I was shocked at how well we did, new driver on half bar of boost. The cars in my group all had stengths and weeknesses, and we ran as a pretty close pack every session. FD had race slicks, and was light, the STi is geared brilliantly and eats up the infield, the NSX was strong all around and had 6 pot AP racing brakes. I'd get away from her on the front straight and then she'd close the gap in the braking zone, then we'd tangle in the infield, and repeat. I need better brakes lines and fluid before the next track outing, I cooked them towards the end of the day. Mission is notorious for that.

Oh, and I'm putting bad weather tires on my original set of wheels, for street tearing perfomance all year 'round.

With my friend Erics's Golf (thanks again for hosting Eric!)

My GTI looks decidedly wussie next to the mighty GT-R.

Kids, the GT-R blows away the Cossie from a performance standpoint: it really is noticeably quicker. In fact, Jay's Skyline has me considering things I probably shouldn't consider (like trading in a 2.5 year old, low km GTI on a 15 year old Japanese car without knowing its history).

So, yeah, performance vs. exclusivity. I'll take performance and a bit of exclusivity. (Yes, Vancouver is likely the R32 Skyline capital of North America.)

And, for what it's worth, the GT-R just feels that extra little bit special. Maybe part of it is the right hand drive, but most of it just comes from the drama: the soundtrack and the serious urgency. Having spent some time in both the GT-R and the Viper GTS pictured with it, the Skyline is the one that's actually more exciting.

Congrats on the new ride, Jay! The Cossie was a tough act to follow, but you've done well.
