I've been wanting to create this thread for a long time now. And since summer is coming once again i see more and more tuned cars driving around. First off. I know this thread is going to get a lot of negative feedback...so lets just say if this isn't your taste, be nice about it. Don't be jerks.
This thread is for tuned cars (usually wild exterior mods), that most people consider "rice". Yes im talking about cars like the fast and the furious. I know im not the only one on this board that likes cars like this. I hate that we have lost a lot of our customization and design ideas due to people thinking its "rice". It seems everyone now is going for the "clean" look, which is good but i also like the wild/more customized look also. I'll start off with some pictures...of what im talking about.

Brabus not rice? I dunno.... a lot of tuner companys aren't doing it right anymore...
I can only think of a few companies that actualy know what they're doing, and actualy have a decent taste.
"From the heavy rumble of a stormy night, through the trumpeting of mighty elephants, to the roar of a raging lion, the SuperVeloce performs the grand opera for 12 cylinders, 48 valves, and 8000 revs!"
Cool thread. I can appreciate an overly done, over the top tuner car. I'll share some.
Granted this one is incredibly well done and has the power to back it up...

I just wonder how some people still get to be called "tuners" when they don't tune jack ****.
"It's the lifestyle," my ass.
I don't care what you call them.. but "tuner" is a misnomer more often than not these days.

Speaking of media, did anyone get any pics? Especially of the white Honda Accord CrossTour in heat 1. As we always say, nearly anything can be autocrossed. ;-)

yeah the word "tuner" has come out of the context of meaning "tuning the engine", but it happens. And usually if you say "tuners" or "modded" people instantly think modified which technically these cars are. Sure you can buy these parts from shops...but if you mix and match parts or colors or styles even to create your own style it becomes more creative and "custom". Just like buying pre-made engine parts or engine swaps. Sure when they are the first to be done its awesome. But how many first have really be created lately? The only difference is one is more cosmetic then the other. You can't really hate them for wanting them to express themselves exteriorly what you guys express interiorly.
Oh and i ran those barbrus pictures above past some friends and they said they were "rice", thats why i added them here...i figured someone would say something about them. I got some modified porcshes also but they aren't as wild to express the point i was trying to get at...

I wonder what is on that kind of people minds. I mean, dump a lot of money on an Aveo? So after you are out of all that money, you still drive an, well, Aveo?
But well, I guess that having an Aveo that uses more fuel than a stock one, still looks dorky, and probably handles worse than stock (not to mention braking times) might have its appeal.
Heck, that car might as well get you some pitty sex!!!
I don't have an issue with the "look" that these guys are going for, BUT....how exactly can you be "wild" and "out there" when you have some cheaply made, often universal bumper that has been designed to fit not only your car but a multitude of others? I mean all of them end up looking the same. If a certain body kit were exclusive to one model car, then I'd be ok with it. The problem is they take a played out body kit, and make it for every cheap econobox you can possibly find. After having seen the kit for the 2345257943 time, it loses its originality and flair and is ultimately deemed "rice".

Listen up, buddy, I've had both - I eat plain bagels with cream cheese all the time, and I know people who've brought me onion bagels to try. I've toasted them both. I've even had poppy seed bagels and bagels and lox with capers. I'll pit your onion bagel against my plain bagel with cream cheese any time anywhere, just meet me halfway.
This is such a whore of a body kit, how many cars has this exact bumper and skirt combo been on? COUNTLESS!

Well, it didn't take long for the haters to come out of the woodwork.
As for me, I think some extreme body mods can definitely look nice. I like that Focus especially. (well both of them in this thread really) The problem I have with a lot of kits is that they just don't flow with the rest of the car. Many times, kits are extreme for the sake of being extreme and don't take into account what it's actually going to look like with the rest of the bodywork.

Needs a drop or some bigger wheels. Doesn't look to bad, I've seen far worse I can say that.

Let's talk about your understanding of a car being "tuned". It sounds like you are incredibly confused.
A Tuner is a skilled company that is able to modify a vehicle through carefulloy thought out enhancemants. These enhancements actually give the car a higher level of performance (either engine output or road handling abilities. Often times, people that have gone to school to be what is called an "Engineer" (not the guy that drives a train) have had a heavy hand in designing parts that serve this purpose.
If you have done any of the following actions to your car you are NOT to be mentioned in the same sentence with a tuner: Hanging 20"chrome wheels Installing a muffler with a 1.75" inlet and 5" exhaust tip Installing coilovers ordered from a magazine Installing a body kit that looks like it is produced for another type of car Painting garish graphics or dischotic paint schemes Applying stickers for parts that aren't on the car The tires you use have a treadwear rating of 300+

no i think you didn't read what i said above...the original meaning of the word tuner was what you applied above...but currently the word has been associated with anything "modified", also pertaining to the exterior.
and what was said before about the bodykits being redundant...its like that with almost all cars...after viewing many vdubs you start to see the same thing...(except for oldskool beetles), they have similar lips kits, rims, and effects. And many of the volkswagen kits (usually the headlights), are borrowing the style from either future models of past models of the vehicle. Not to mention that angel eyes are originally scene mostly on bmws (i think?), but a lot of peoples first modifications to most headlights are angle eyes. Or blacked out. But again i point out that when its mixed and matched or even differently painted it changes the design a bit to make them nice.
But most clean model modified cars which people now consider "nice" are basic and start to look the same also (dropped, lip kit, exhaust, tint). So the arguement can go both ways. But, a lot of the new cars coming out that still value the wild style improve there interiors along with there exteriors. But since its not "clean" people frown upon it even if it has over 400hp. I understand when you see local teens driving there modified cars and you know there is nothing underneath the hood it probably bothers you, but again they didn't want there car to be as similar as everyone car driving around town. You can't really hate them for that. Sure maybe that bodykit is made for many other cars...but i bet there are more factory looking cars then similarly modified cars driving around.
More pics...

yeah, its okay to put gucci in the headliner of an mk4 golf but not put on a bodykit.
I agree when certain body kits don't flow together they do look bad. And i hate that too when someone goes extreme just to see if they could do it without consideration for style, but then again style depends on the individual so what one person hates (LIKE IN THIS THREAD), one person likes.

Where is the individuality? Mixing and matching kits and wheels doesn't make you Picasso, it just makes you another ***** driving another riced out car that looks very similar to all the other juvenile, non-functional nightmares farting around suburbia. BTW, I've never seen chrome wheels on a racecar before.
If you want to look fast, why weigh your car down with so much useless crap? The problem I have with tuner cars is 90% of the time, not only do they look crap but they're slow too... that doesn't stop every be-winged SOHC FWD hatchback with a fart cannon trying to race me away from the lights though.
If you want to look cool, do some custom work and inject a little bit of your own style into your ride, if you don't know what your personal style is, don't... otherwise you'll be another lemming ***** that everyone but skanks and idiots laughs at.
If you want to look fast and as a result look cool, do some meaningful performance upgrades, then learn to drive. Driving a stick doesn't make you a racecar driver.
Custom work that you did yourself, an eye for detail and proportion is where it's at. End rant.
BTW, "A" is used for consonants, i.e. "I bough a Volkswagen Golf that I'm about to destroy with a bunch of tacky add-ons that really don't match it's clean German style whatsoever." "An" is used with vowels, for example: "People think I'm an idiot."

when i get home from work i don't always speak so proper, specially since its the internet. BUT, i understand what your saying but i don't think you get what i am saying. Lets take me for example (not that i don't have an modified car), but when i get my car modified most of my mods will be exterior. Mostly because i like my gas mileage and don't really want to affect it (4 cylinder honda accord). If i can figure out an way to increase my acceleration without sacrificing gas mileage i may do that. I like the way those cars look. I like alternative hoods, even if they come off an assembly line. I like certain lips, i like the sound of custom exhaust, i like certain body kits. I like custom paint jobs i like custom decals. They look nice to me and other people. I will not race my car...im actually slowing down my driving because i enjoy driving and the drive. If i make mine different from most of the factory cars driving around to me makes it custom.
Chrome wheels are meant to look nice, i agree not for racing...but to each his own...
i can understand when people have unpainted body kits and cheap exhaust and drive around town like they are hot, but look silly. But when people actually have an vision and develop there cars and DO HAVE HORSEPOWER, and have a nice look, my problem is people still down the cars. For example the supra above. It is done nicely, it does go fast, and i think it looks nice, BUT people will still talk about it because it has an wing, or because it has graphics or something silly like that...thats part of the style. I understand if you don't like it but, i feel most peoples arguments aren't legit.

That Supra looks silly; a caricature of what was once a tasteful car. The wing that came on the car from the factory, that was designed to be on the car, was not silly.
I feel that taking cars and effectively paying to vandalize them and then drive them around as if it's an improvement, is not legit. It's nowhere near "tuning" - it's bastardizing. Simply put, tuning is not the correct term for it. I don't care that somewhere along the line someone took the term and applied to something that is not tuning. It's still false.
Do what you want, and like what you like. It's not like there aren't more likeminded people out thar, hurting my eyes and ears.
